Philosophy and videogames

MMO design god/guru/whatever/don't ask me I don't really play MMOs Raph Koster is known to take a very systemic approach to design.

This is what he has to say about torture.

How could one not link to a post explaining how and why torture is bad game design?

I wish he was right when he mentioned "the nations of the world" outlawing it. Almost all the nations of the world, regardless of political model or development status, legally permit behaviors defined by most experts as torture.

Admittedly, little of it in the first world is the sort of stuff we think about when people talk about torture in films, fiction, and video games. Most of it has simply to do with sensory distortion and sleep deprivation - but the effects are amazingly devastating on both a psychological and physical level.

I agree with you there - of course right now I'd be glad when said nations would at least try to stop finding loopholes to be able to use what they define as torture.
Or would care about human rights even when it's inconvenient.
