In short: Frenchman's Farm (1987)

A fire forces Jackie (Tracey Tainsh), a law student in her final year, to make a detour on her way home to Brisbane.

When she arrives at a place called "Frenchman's Farm", she witnesses the decapitation of a man digging a big hole on the farm grounds. The killer sees her, but she manages to escape. The police and her boyfriend Barry (David Reyne) are not very helpful in the aftermath, so she decides to do a little research. It turns out that there had in fact been a murder on the farm - in the year 1944!

Curiosity drives Jackie and a slowly un-jerkening Barry back to the farm and the nearby town. Probably not the best idea of their lives.

This small Australian picture is a minor surprise. It starts out as a ghost story I was afraid would soon turn into a stupid slasher, turns into a mystery with historical dimensions and finally ends like an Australian update of an M.R. James tale.

The film surely isn't a lost masterwork, but a fine find for people who like ghost stories.
