In short: Splinter (2008)

The young couple of Polly (Jill Wagner) and Seth (Paulo Costanzo) probably had something a little different in mind than they get on their camping trip.

First they are taken hostage by an escaped convict (Shea Whigham) and his drugged-out girlfriend (Rachel Kerbs), only to then have to hole up with their kidnappers in a gas station in the middle of nowhere when a delightful new organism attacks. A parasite that attaches itself to its victims in the form of black splinters and has a certain affinity to make moving art out of dead body parts surely is a wonderful thing to discover, especially if it would very much like to infect you too.

Well, I think I have seen all characters in this film already in other movies of the same type (would you believe the convict has a good heart and the science student is rather impractical?), but the actors are good enough to lend the clichés just enough life to stop them from being too annoying. The direction is rather tight, if somewhat too much in love with fast cuts and the ole shaky cam, while the script is far from being original.

Fortunately, I don't watch films like this for their originality and am more than willing to tolerate minor plot holes (and even silly ideas like the body temperature scene) when the movie in question is a fun enough ride. Splinter most certainly is.
